How to Get to Sisal

Sisal sits about 53 km northwest of Mérida, on the Yucatán Gulf coast. Despite being a designated Magic Town, it has almost no chain transport: no Uber pickup zone, no airport shuttle, no ADO bus station at the village itself. That makes the trip slightly more involved than reaching Progreso or Mérida — and it's one of the reasons Sisal stays uncrowded. This guide covers every realistic option.

From Mérida (the most common starting point)

If your trip starts in Mérida — as most international visits to Yucatán do — Sisal is about 45–55 minutes by car, depending on traffic in the Mérida ring road. Three options:

Rental car

The easiest. Take Highway 281 northwest out of Mérida toward Hunucmá, continue 10 km past Hunucmá, and follow the signs to Sisal. The road is two-lane, well-paved, and easy to drive in daylight. Parking in Sisal is free and abundant — every lodging has room, and the beach itself has informal lots. A small SUV or sedan is more than enough. Estimate around 600–900 MXN per day for a car rental in Mérida (typically about 30–45 USD).

ADO bus + collective van

The "Hunucmá" ADO buses leave Mérida's CAME terminal hourly. Get off in Hunucmá (about 35 minutes, ~50 MXN). From Hunucmá's central square, "combis" (shared vans) leave for Sisal roughly every 30 minutes during daylight hours, taking 15–20 minutes more, for about 25–30 MXN. Total: under 80 MXN (~4 USD) and 1 h 15 min door-to-door.

Private taxi or rideshare

Uber does not officially operate in Hunucmá or Sisal, but Mérida-based drivers will usually accept the trip for around 700–900 MXN (35–45 USD) one-way. Negotiate the return trip when you arrive, or book through your lodging — most can arrange a known driver for the way back.

From the Mérida airport (MID)

Mérida's international airport (MID) is south of the city. Total drive time to Sisal is about 1 hour 5 minutes. Options:

From Cancún (the longer trip)

If your trip starts in Cancún or Riviera Maya, Sisal is significantly further. The drive is about 4 hours on the cuota (toll) highway via Mérida.

From Progreso (Yucatán's other beach town)

Surprisingly tricky considering it's only 35 km away. The coastal road between Progreso and Sisal exists but is in variable condition, and there is no direct bus. Easiest is to go inland to Hunucmá (about 40 minutes), then back out to Sisal. Total drive: about 50 minutes by car.

Once you're in Sisal — getting around

Sisal is small enough to walk anywhere within the village. Bicycle rentals are available from a few lodging hosts (around 100–150 MXN/day). For trips to El Palmar reserve or for sandbar tours, your tour operator handles transport. You don't need a car inside the village.

Tip from locals: Mérida's "Sunday closing" of certain main streets for cycling can add 15–20 minutes to the way out. If you're leaving Mérida on Sunday morning, give yourself extra time. Live traffic and current bus times are kept updated on visitsisal.mx.
